WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. – In his last outing, Plattsburgh State pitcher
Scott Orr gave up a trio of early runs which ultimately led to a SUNYAC defeat at the hands of Oswego State.
He had no intention of replicating those results on Saturday night.
Fueled by a complete-game outing by Orr as well as all the offense they needed via a 2-for-3, two-RBI performance by senior first baseman
Chris Pescetti, the Cardinals took down SUNYAC rival Oneonta State 2-0 at Dutchess Stadium.
Orr, who calls Baldwinsville, N.Y., home, improved to 3-1 after his 132-pitch, 10-strikeout performance and upped the Cardinals' record to 8-11 and 3-4 in SUNYAC games. James McCarty took the tough loss for the Red Dragons as he fell to 0-3 by throwing eight innings and surrendering five walks, and six hits. Oneonta State falls to 3-12 and 0-4 in league games.
An aggressive pitching style also contributed greatly in Orr's win as 19 of the 35 batters he faced were issued first-pitch strikes.
TJ Montalbano (2-for-4) also had a multi-hit game for the Cardinals while
Frank Buksa went 1-for-3 and scored both of the games' runs.
None of Oneonta State's first 10 batters were allowed to reach the base paths and even though Orr gave up the first hit and base on balls to the Red Dragons in the fourth, he still faced the minimum of 12 batters as both of those baserunners were caught on steal attempts.
All the offense the Cardinals required came in the bottom of the sixth as senior
Brian Latulipe led off the three-hit frame with a double to left center field. Buksa followed up Latulipe's two-bagger with an infield single to place runners at the corners.
After an out, Pescetti turned on a 2-2 offering from McCarty and send it to left field which allowed Buksa to scamper home from second.
The Cardinals' insurance run came in the home half of the eighth as Buksa took first after being plunked by a 1-2 pitch from McCarty. Montalbano responded by cranking a double to center field which advanced Buksa to third and set the table for Pescetti again. The senior sent another single to left field to plate Buksa and account for the final score.
Orr's only big-time jam of the game occurred in the top of the ninth when a walk and two singles loaded the bases for the Red Dragons. The junior rose to the challenge, though, and blew away Mike Cruz on five pitches and sealing the win for Plattsburgh State. Orr fared well against Samuel Beaulac, Cruz and Wayne Baker. The seven, eight and nine-hole hitters went 3-for-11 and struck out a combined six times.
Beaulac and Joe Franke each had two hits for Oneonta State in the loss.
It'll be nearly a week before the Cardinals hit the field once again, and like every other one of their 2015 tilts so far, this one will take place outside of Plattsburgh, N.Y. A road trip to Brockport, N.Y., is in order as the Cardinals are scheduled to begin a three-game series with The College at Brockport with a single nine-inning game at 3 p.m. on Friday.
