Softball Heads to Amherst Regional as Second Seed

INDIANAPOLISThe Plattsburgh State softball team will compete in an eight-team regional hosted by Amherst College after claiming the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title to receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Cardinals (31-9) are the second-seed in the tournament which is set for Thursday-Monday, May 10-14, in Amherst, Mass.
 
Plattsburgh will close out the first day of play against seventh-seeded University of New England (26-12) Thursday at 4 p.m. SUNYAC foe Cortland (38-8) received the top seed and will open the tournament against eighth-seeded Keuka College (21-12) Thursday at 10 a.m. The other two Thursday matchups include fourth-seeded Keene St. College (25-10-1) versus fifth-seeded St. Joseph’s College (33-7) at noon and third-seeded Amherst (34-4) versus sixth-seeded Husson College (33-11) at 2 p.m.
 
The winner of the double-elimination regional will advance to the eight-team NCAA Division III World Series in Salem, Va., May 18-22.

The Cardinals will be making their third NCAA appearance and its first since 2007 when Plattsburgh advance to the World Series. This year’s trip will mark the first under head coach Stephanie Zweig.
 
Plattsburgh defeated Cortland, 3-2, on Sunday to win the second SUNYAC Championship in program history.
