BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women’s tennis team earned a 5-0 win in the first day of play at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championships before falling, 5-0, in a semifinal match Saturday evening at the Binghamton Tennis Center.
Plattsburgh 5, Fredonia 0
On Friday night, the Cardinals topped Fredonia, 5-0, in the SUNYAC Quarterfinals, ensuring Plattsburgh a spot in the winner’s bracket. Plattsburgh took all three doubles matches and earned wins at third and fourth singles en route to the win.
Jessica Paquette and Samantha Engebrecht defeated Fredonia State’s Alison Phillips and Sara DiFulvio, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles as the Plattsburgh pair improves to 8-2 on the year. Plattsburgh’s Rachel Hodnett paired up with Caitlin Belladone at No. 2 doubles, earning an 8-3 win over Miller Barmasse and Molly Zanetti. The Cardinals also got a nice outing for the pair of Samantha Fasciano and Stephanie Omlin, who topped Jessica Johnston and Stephanie Thompson, 8-2, in No. 3 doubles.
Paquette improved to 5-1 this season at third singles, defeating Phillips by a score of 6-1, 6-1. Omlin had a perfect outing at fourth singles, beating Barmasse, 6-0, 6-0. The remaining singles matches were halted once the Cardinals had secured the victory.

The Cardinals battled in their three doubles matches, but could not overcome the Blue Knights. Paquette and Engebrecht suffered an 8-4 loss at No. 1 doubles, while Hodnett and Belladone were dealt the same fate at No. 2 doubles. Fasciano and Omlin dropped their match at No. 3 doubles by a score of 8-6.
Geneseo earned the win by picking up points at fourth and fifth singles. Geneseo’s Sarah Shields topped Omlin at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-0 and Plattsburgh’s Jackie Bogdon suffered a loss at No. 5 singles to Zakiyyah Abdus-Salaam by a score of 6-0, 6-0.
The remaining singles matches were halted once the Blue Knights earned five points to advance to the Sunday’s match against New Paltz for the SUNYAC Championship. The Cardinals fall to 8-4 overall and will play Oneonta State Sunday at noon for third place.
