PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.
– Kate Fairfield scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on a breakaway in the first period as the No. 3-ranked Plattsburgh State Cardinals came away with a 2-1 win over Oswego State Saturday afternoon.

Fairfield’s tally came with 52 seconds left in the first period as she took a feed from Brittany Meade, beat an Oswego defender and then goalie Emi Williams to her blocker side. It was Fairfield's second goal of the season.

Kylie Klassen got the Cardinals on the board first with her sixth goal of the year 8:04 into the first period. Plattsburgh defender Allison Era took a shot from the left point that got knocked down in front. Klassen spun around and fired the puck on the ice to the left side for the goal.

Oswego’s Brenna Weber notched her first goal of the season on the power play for the Lakers at the 16:58 mark of the second period, putting home a loose puck past Plattsburgh goaltender Mandy Mackrell.

Williams made 34 saves for the Lakers and garnered second star of the game honors. Mackrell stopped 19 shots in the Cardinal net.

With the win, the Cardinals move to 13-2-1, 9-1-2 in the Eastern College Athletic Conference West division. The Lakers fall to .500 at 5-5-3 in ECAC West play. They are 9-7-3 overall.

The Cardinals hosted their first Pink the Rink day before a crowd of 527 at Stafford Ice Arena. Proceeds from the event go to the Fitzpatrick Cancer Center Treasure Chests Fund of CVPH.

Plattsburgh and Oswego will close out their two-game set Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Stafford Ice Arena.
